چکیده

In this paper, we present an integrated wind-erosion modelling system which couples a physically based wind-erosion scheme, a high-resolution atmospheric model and a dust-transport model with a geographic information database. This system can be used to determine the pattern and intensity of wind erosion, in particular, dust emission from the surface and dust concentration in the atmosphere. The system can also be used for the prediction of individual dust-storm events. We have implemented the system for examining the dust storms over the Australian continent in February 1996. It is shown that over the 1 month period, the total dust emission from the continent was about 1.87 Mt. The dominant dust particles are found in the size range from 0 to 11 μm. Larger particles are only found during dust-storm periods. The major dust emission locations and dust pathways detected by the model are comparable with satellite image and climatology of wind erosion in Australia. A discussion is given on the limitations and uncertainties of the system.  2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Use of Anemometric Results and Threshold Velocities for Determination of Proper Regions Where Sand Storms are Generated (Case Study: Around the Synoptic Station of Yazd)

In order to recognize the wind erosion situation of a region, the survey of its windiness is not sufficient and the physical characteristics of earth are of importance too. In fact, the outbreak of dust storms in a region is due to the sensitivity of earth and domination of wind in that region. In this investigation we have tried to find a way for determining the regions in which a dust storm i...

Investigating Wind Speed Reduction Rate and Aeolian Erosion via Multi-Row Windbreak in Three Dust Storm Events

Introduction: Wind erosion results from desertification in arid and semi-arid regions and is intensified by any decrease in rainfall and vegetation. Sistan region, located in southeastern Iran, has been exposed to severe wind erosion and dust storms for about 23 years as a result of frequent and prolonged drought in the region and desiccation of Hamoun lakes. Therefore, finding appropriate meth...

Effects of Wind Erosion and Soil Salinization on Dust Storm Emission in Western Iran

Dust storms are known as hazardous problems in western part of Iran. Iraq is one of the main sources for dust storm arriving to the western part of Iran. The Radial Basis Function Network model (RBFN) has been used to assess wind erosion hazards in the source area of dust storms over several western Iranian cities. Normalized Difference Salinity Index (NDSI) was used to determine the changes in...

An Investigation of Land-Use Effect on Dust Concentration and Soil Loss in Desert Areas: A Case of Ein Khosh-Dehloran, Ilam

Extended abstract 1- Introduction The occurrence of dust storms caused by wind erosion is a process that causes the destruction of land and can also be considered as a desertification indicator (Xu, 2006). Generally, the formation of a dust storm depends on three factors: the presence of strong winds, a sensitive surface to wind erosion and unstable weather conditions (Xia and Yang, 1996). Hu...

Modelling the Relationship between the Frequency of Dust Storms and Climatic Variables in the Summer Time in Desert Areas of Iran

The purpose of this study was to model the relationship between the frequency of dust storms and climatic variables in desert areas of Iran. For this purpose, climatic data of temperature (maximum and minimum), rainfall, wind speed (maximum and minimum), and their relationship with the number of days with dust recorded in 25 meteorological stations (statistical period since their inception unti...
